# How to Keep a Long-Running AI Task on Track

Work that does not finish in one turn needs somewhere to live. Goals, sub-threads and memory are three different answers, and picking the wrong one is why long tasks drift.

_Work that finishes in one answer needs no structure. Work that takes twenty turns does — and Insulin offers three different places to put it: a goal for the objective, a sub-thread for the side question, and memory for what should outlast the conversation. Most long-task drift is one of these being used where another belonged._

* * *

The first week with an AI workspace is all single questions. The second week someone tries to do something real with it — reconcile a quarter, migrate a process, work through a backlog — and discovers that a conversation is a poor container for work that takes a while.

The symptoms are consistent. The thread grows until nobody can find the decision that was made on turn nine. A side question about formatting derails the main task for six turns. Someone restarts from scratch because steering felt harder than starting over. This post covers the three structures Insulin provides, and when each is the right one.

## Goals: for the objective that outlives the turn

**A goal tracks a multi-turn objective with live status, and can be steered while it runs.** That is the important half — steered, not just watched. Long work goes wrong gradually, and the cost of a correction rises the longer you wait to make one.

The practical difference is between “do this thing” as a message and the objective as a tracked object. A message is finished when the turn ends. A goal persists across turns, carries its own status, and remains something you can redirect without restating the whole task.

Use one when the work has an end state you could describe now but cannot reach in one step — a migration, a reconciliation, a review pass over a list. If you can say what “done” looks like and it is more than a turn away, that is the shape.

## Sub-threads: for the question that would derail the main one

**A sub-thread branches a nested discussion from a specific message.** It exists because of a failure mode everyone recognises: the tangent that eats the thread.

You are eight turns into something and need to check one detail — a definition, a format, whether a number is right. Ask it inline and the main thread now contains six turns about something else, and the context it was holding is diluted. Start a new conversation and you lose the context entirely and have to rebuild it.

Branching from the message keeps the tangent attached to the point it came from, without the main line absorbing it. The heuristic: if answering the question would make the main thread harder to read afterwards, branch it.

## Memory: for what should outlive both

Insulin’s chat carries **short-term context plus persistent long-term knowledge across conversations**. The distinction to hold onto is that the first is about _this_ task and the second is about _how you work_ — a preference, a convention, a standing constraint that should apply next month too.

The mistake is putting durable facts in a thread. A convention stated on turn four of a conversation you will never reopen is a convention that does not exist. If it should apply to the next task, it does not belong in this one. We have written separately about [what agents should remember and forget](/blog/enterprise-ai-agent-memory/) — this is the same principle at conversation scale.

## Choosing between them

If the thing is…

Put it in

Because

An objective with a described end state, several turns away

A **goal**

It persists, shows status, and can be steered without restating

A side question that would dilute the current thread

A **sub-thread**

It stays attached to the message it came from

A preference or constraint that should apply next time

**Memory**

A thread you will not reopen cannot carry it

A genuinely different task

A **new conversation**

Conversations are persisted automatically; there is no cost to starting one

That last row is the one people resist, and it is worth saying plainly: starting a new conversation is not losing work. Conversations are persisted automatically and remain in the sidebar. The reason to keep a thread going is shared context, not a fear of losing it — and when the context stops being shared, the thread has stopped earning its length.

## Where this stops, and jobs begin

One boundary worth drawing, because it is the most common mis-fit. Everything above is about work you are present for. A goal can be steered, which implies somebody is there to steer it.

Work that should happen without you — on a schedule, or on a trigger — is a [job](/jobs/), not a long conversation. If your answer to “who is watching this?” is “nobody, it should just run,” you want the scheduled object, not the steerable one. Reaching for a long thread to do unattended work is how a task ends up half-finished with nobody aware of it.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is a goal in Insulin?** An objective tracked across multiple turns with live status, which can be steered while it is running. It is the right container for work with a describable end state that takes more than one turn to reach.

**When should I use a sub-thread instead of just asking?** When answering the question inline would make the main thread harder to follow afterwards. A sub-thread branches from a specific message, so the tangent stays attached to its origin without diluting the main line.

**What belongs in memory rather than in a conversation?** Anything that should still apply to the next task — a preference, a convention, a standing constraint. A rule stated inside a thread you will never reopen effectively does not exist.

**Is starting a new conversation losing work?** No. Conversations are persisted automatically and stay available. The reason to continue a thread is shared context; once the context is no longer shared, a new conversation is the cleaner choice.

**When is this the wrong tool entirely?** When nobody is present. A goal is steerable, which assumes a person is there. Work that should run on a schedule or a trigger belongs in a job instead.

## Takeaways

- **Three containers, three jobs.** A goal holds the objective, a sub-thread holds the tangent, memory holds what should outlast both.
- **Steering beats restarting.** A goal can be redirected while it runs, which is cheaper than rebuilding context from zero.
- **Branch before the tangent eats the thread.** If answering inline would hurt readability later, it belongs in a sub-thread.
- **A convention stated in a dead thread is not a convention.** Durable rules go in memory.
- **If nobody is watching it, it is a job.** Steerability assumes a person; unattended work belongs on a schedule.

Long work is mostly a question of where things live. See [jobs](/jobs/) for the unattended half, or [book a demo](/schedule-demo/) to walk through a real multi-turn task.
